Is Tim Weah's chemistry with Weston McKennie the secret weapon USMNT desperately needs?

It’s safe to say the US Men’s National Team is going with the flow. The inaugural international window for Mauricio Pochettino felt like a beta testing phase, as he did his best with the American boys, securing a win against Panama and suffering a defeat to Mexico. While this experimental approach surely won’t be the norm in future windows, Tim Weah seems to be ahead of the curve, as the USMNT star is suggesting bold ideas almost like a loose cannon.

The Juventus playmaker was forced to withdraw from the recent friendly clashes by Pochettino due to a significant injury. While the 24-year-old would be looking to quickly recuperate from his knock and make an appearance for his nation in the next matches, he wants to do so in a different style—specifically, a different position. How exactly did this idea come to his mind in the first place, you ask? Well, Weston McKennie is the answer!

“Honestly, Wes is one of the main reasons why I came here [to Juventus],” began Weah while speaking to The Athletic FC. “I knew he was here and I knew I was going to have one of my best friends on the team here. And off the pitch, I’m always at his house. We’re always chilling, so already we have that type of relationship…” continued the youngster, before sharing how the move to Italy has made him realize his actual position on the field.

“…And then taking that to the field was amazing, obviously in a different position because when I play with him on the national team, I’m higher up, so we have a different connection, but playing lower and closer to him. I mean, if you look at a lot of my games, the majority of my best games are when me and Wes are playing next to each other,” concluded Weah.

The majority of times, we have witnessed Tim Weah take up the attacking place on the right side. While that’s also the case for him when he plays for Juventus, the major difference is that he has a bit of an inward role. This allows him to get more involved with McKennie on the pitch, ergo helping the USMNT duo build a special chemistry.

Hence, this is no less than a subtle message for Mauricio Pochettino to try experimenting with the exact plan that Weah has in mind for himself. Who knows? That may bring the best. However, that won’t alone may not be the solution to USMNT’s existing problems!

Tim Weah wants Mauricio Pochettino and USMNT to capitalize on its strong ‘relationship’

It’s not just his own sake that Timothy Weah is worried about. The attacking star wants his fellow teammates to forge a solid foundation from the start. “Obviously, with a new coach, we’re going to have to rebuild. The relationship we have as a team is something a lot of other teams don’t really have” added Weah in a similar segment.

Further underlining his positive stance, Weah emphasized the importance of fostering understanding and chemistry among teammates to achieve success on the field. He highlighted that the national team members, many of whom play overseas, are gaining valuable experience and exposure to high-level soccer, which can be leveraged to enhance their collective performance.

All of this sounds fancy but it’s the implementation and results that many are eager to see!
