The FIFA World Cup 2022 is running in its glory and teams are trying their best to win the prestigious trophy. Apart from FIFA, several adverts are also the major topic of talk for fans. Nike released an advert featuring many legendary players, and it became a topic for discussion, as it had female players. The advert generated so much heat because the World Cup was going to be in Qatar, where female rights are present but questionable.

Frito-Lay released an advert featuring Peyton Manning and David Beckham. The advert has the premise of debate on whether the sport should be called soccer or football. This debate is very historic and fans did enjoy the little banter.

The history of football/ soccer

Football or soccer is being played since medieval times, however, there were no rules. Workers used to play the game in their free time. In the mid-19th century, several schools in Britain started adopting soccer as a sport for students. Cambridge University then decided to make uniform rules for the game. With colonialism, the game had already spread worldwide.

In the USA/NA people started calling the game ‘soccer’, whereas the rest of the world called it football. With the popularity of the Internet, this difference became a meme. It became confusing as the US had a sport very similar to Rugby and they called it football.

The latest Frito-Lay advert is based on FIFA WC and premised on the debate of football vs soccer. Veteran American footballer Peyton Manning presented his side for soccer and English legendary star David Beckham sided with football. The advert is amazing and has gained a lot of praise.

Twitter has ended the debate

MLS marketing expert Kyle Sheldon found articles from a British newspaper. They published the articles in 1950 and had something that can end this soccer vs football debate. The headline title is “England lose cup match, one of the worst soccer games.” He posted three pictures and said, “Why, yes, I did go back and find a bunch of articles in 1950 English newspapers the day after the U.S. beat England 1-0 in the World Cup… AND THEY CALLED IT SOCCER.”

Twitter fandom had hilarious reactions to it:
