Dutch soccer player Marco van Basten named Pele, Diego, and Johan Cruyff as the greatest players of all time. The Dutch legend recognized Pele and Maradona as the most extraordinary players. They inspired generations with their exemplary performances for both their countries and clubs in their careers.
Additionally, Van Basten harbored profound admiration for Johan Cruyff. He considered the Barca legend as a role model from the beginning of his career.
Van Basten remarked in the France Football magazine, “Pele, Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff are, for me, the three greatest players in history. When I was a child he wanted to be like Cruyff. He was my friend, I miss him. Pelé and Maradona were also incredible.”
Soccer enthusiasts mentioned that Cristiano Ronaldo and La Pulga also deserve to be on the list of the best players. The AC Milan icon placed Ronnie with Michel Platini and Zinedine Zidane in the GOAT conversation. Surprisingly, he left out Lionel Messi from his selection with his own opinion, which was lambasted by the critics and numerous soccer fans.

The Ajax icon made a shocking claim about Lionel Messi. Van Basten believed that the world champion did not transcend the leadership and assertiveness within a team, like Diego Maradona. The 58-year-old legend added, “Messi is also a great player, but Maradona has always had more personality in a team. Messi is not the one who goes to the front to go to war.”
Antonio Cassano, the AC Milan star, didn’t appreciate the Dutch legend’s remark on Lionel Messi. He strongly opposed the opinion and expressed displeasure in the latest episode of Bobo TV. Cassano said, “Now he even says bulls*it about Messi. When he didn’t put him among the three greatest in history because he doesn’t have personality, do I answer him because he wins games?”.
