The summer transfer window has witnessed an abundance of notable signings. And for Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham AFC, the transfer window has been a rollercoaster ride. As the club eagerly prepares for its much-anticipated return to EFL League Two, it has faced its fair share of disappointments in its pursuit of new signings. However, Reynolds may need to open his wallet a little wider as Wrexham sets its sights on a fresh target.
Throughout the transfer window, Wrexham has prioritized bolstering its midfield. The club had made attempts to sign accomplished midfielders such as Nick Powell and Luke Leahy, only to be met with disappointment. Nonetheless, their quest to secure a talented midfielder continues, and their attention has now turned to 26-year-old Matty Virtue.

Matty Virtue currently plies his trade at Blackpool FC but is currently on loan to Lincoln City FC. Reports suggest that Wrexham has identified him as a primary transfer target and expresses a keen desire to bring him to the club. However, the road to acquiring Virtue’s services is fraught with obstacles.
Firstly, Lincoln City is reluctant to part ways with the highly-rated midfielder. They are determined to retain his services for the upcoming season. Additionally, Blackpool, with whom Virtue only has one year remaining on his contract, demands a significant sum of $260,000 from interested parties looking to secure his signature. With a personal fortune estimated at $350 million, Reynolds certainly has the financial means to facilitate the acquisition of Virtue.
Also, the midfielder’s pedigree and experience make him an attractive proposition for the Welsh side. He was a member of the Liverpool squad from 2017 to 2019. Although Virtue did not feature in any matches, being part of such a prestigious club undoubtedly adds value to his profile. Looking ahead, it remains to be seen whether Reynolds will be successful in making this signing. Anyhow, striking a deal in the notoriously competitive transfer market is a challenging endeavor, as Reynolds’ side has learned earlier.
Wrexham’s struggles in the transfer window
Wrexham has faced challenges in attracting new players since the summer transfer window opened. The team experienced disappointments with failed attempts to sign Nick Powell, an ex-Manchester United player. After that came Luke Leahy, who initially showed interest in joining the Ryan Reynolds project but ultimately chose a different path. However, there came positive news on Friday when Wrexham announced their first summer signing.

Strengthening their defensive line, the club secured the services of 27-year-old defender Will Boyle. Previously playing for Huddersfield Town in the EFL Championship, Boyle made the decision to drop down two leagues to join Wrexham. His arrival will bring much-needed experience to the defense as they continue their pursuit of promotion. It remains to be seen if they will also successfully secure a signing from Matty Virtue.
