Wrexham AFC had a roller coaster start to their League Two campaign, with some highs and lows, while trying to seek the rhythm in the league. The Reds had an emotional occasion with the farewell of their veteran goalkeeper mid-season. Also, they were eager to revive their interest in a 25-year-old left-back to strengthen their defense before the transfer window came to a close.

Portsmouth FC was seeking to transfer their ex-Sunderland player, who is keen on departing the League One team following an inconsistent run. On the other hand, Wrexham was looking to capitalize on this opportunity to sign a player for the squad, given their poor start to the season along with the unexpected retirement of Ben Foster, which came as a surprise to the Red Dragons.

Earlier in the transfer window, Ryan Reynolds’s side expressed their interest in signing Portsmouth’s left-back Denver Hume with a transfer fee of $215000, but developments were not enough to secure a deal. Hume sought a change of scenery at a new club to get his career back on track with an inconsistent run with the League One side. However, Portsmouth was keen to offload Hume before the transfer window closed on September 1, as his contract was due to expire next year.

Eventually, Wrexham refocused their attention on the Blue’s defender after a change in circumstances for the League Two side. The Reds had the worst defensive record in League Two this season, conceding 13 goals in just 5 games. In their quest to strengthen the defensive third, Hume appeared to be a good fit for their needs while being currently placed 15 in the league. Amidst their poor start to the season, the shocking news of their 40-year-old goalkeeper’s retirement was a major setback for the squad and owner.

Wrexham AFC had won just one game and conceded more than a dozen goals in their opening four games of League Two. Meanwhile, the revelation of Ben Foster’s retirement on August 21 came as a shock to the Red Dragons and its fans. The former Manchester United goalkeeper played a key role in helping the Red Dragons end their 15-year exile in the Football League, keeping three clean sheets in eight games.

Although Foster’s declining form and conceding 13 goals in 4 appearances without a clean sheet, this season led to his decision to hang up the gloves. As it stands, Wrexham would be looking to start afresh in their League Two campaign against Barrow on Saturday, without the services of the ex-Manchester United in their further campaign.
