Now, word is out that another legendary soccer icon is in the hospital, battling a severe illness.

FC Barcelona recently welcomed veteran defender Inigo Martinez. Amid the joy of signing a new player, a concerning update about a Barca legend’s hospitalization has hit the web. Now, soccer enthusiasts have come together to pray for the 57-year-old’s betterment.

Soccer World grows concerned over FCB legend’s health

Former Brazil striker and FC Barcelona legend Romario de Souza Faria was hospitalized on Thursday, according to his press office. The 1994 FIFA World Cup winner was taken to a hospital in Rio de Janeiro after he complained of severe discomfort and pain. Upon examination, Romario was diagnosed with an intestinal infection. In 2021, the former striker underwent surgery to remove his gall bladder.

‘Barca News,’ a media company that covers the Catalan club, was quick to tweet about the club legend’s health update, and share concerns for him. Barca News tweeted Romario’s picture from his Barcelona days. “Thoughts and prayers to Barça legend Romario, who has been hospitalised after suffering from an intestinal infection,” Barca News captioned their tweet. Seeing the update, soccer buffs on Twitter have shared their concerns for the legend. Much to the relief of soccer fans, updates suggest that Romario’s health condition is stable, and he is improving.

During his legendary soccer stint, Romario played for clubs both in his home, Brazil, and in Europe. During his days in Europe, the Brazilian striker spent majority of his days at FC Barcelona.

Romario’s illustrious stint and Barcelona days

Romario kick-started his journey with professional soccer clubs at his home turf, playing for Vasco da Gama in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. Having become the top scorer at the 1988 Olympics, he joined the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven. Five years later, Romario joined FC Barcelona to play under the legendary player turned manager, Johan Cryuff. Romario went on to win a La Liga title in his first season with FCB.

The 57-year-old is widely regarded as one of the most prolific goalscorers soccer has ever seen. After taking his talents to different clubs, including the Miami FC, Romario returned to his first club Vasco da Gama. There, the legendary striker scored his thousandth goal, a feat which only a few players have achieved.
