Cardiac arrests suffered in soccer are happening several times now. And now, a 21-year-old college student passed away after suffering a heart attack. Mercer University’s Baba Agbaje passed away in an unfortunate turn of events.

The player played for the Mercer Bears soccer team and suffered a heart attack during the game, according to a coroner for Macon-Bibb County in Georgia. The news shook the fans, and they could not believe the tragic death.

According to the Western Journal, the coroner Leon Jones confirmed the cause of death because of a cardiac arrest. However, according to Alive, “No official cause of death has yet been determined, as an autopsy has not yet been performed.” Whatever is said and done, the loss is to his community as a young, vibrant person had lost his life at a very tender age.

A soccer player suffers cardiac arrest on the pitch

Mercer President William D. Underwood also commented on the incident. He stated, “Our hearts go out to the Agbaje family on their tragic loss and ask the Mercer family to keep them in their thoughts and prayers.” The coach of Mercer Bears, Brad Ruzzo, commented on the incident. He stated, “He was an incredible person, who embodied what it means to be a Mercer Bear.”

One of his other teachers, Bunky Colvin, who taught him at his high school in Peachtree, Georgia, failed to believe what happened. He commented, “Every teacher he ever had, every person he ever had contact with, just thought.'”

In addition, he also stated how he had a big smile that helped him connect with people. He could be close to anyone in an instant. The incident draws light to the safety of soccer athletes on the pitch. Earlier, at the 2020 Euros, Denmark’s Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest. But, due to the medics’ timely intervention, they could save his life. Therefore, Baba’s untimely passing caused a lot of concern. Cardiac arrests are frequent after the Covid-19 pandemic, and people live in fear. 

Are cardiac arrests on the rise after the pandemic?

After the Covid-19 pandemic, many young students are experiencing heart problems. According to a study in 2022, people who tested positive for the virus had an increase in cardiovascular problems. Problems like irregular heartbeat, heart failure, and inflammation are on the rise as the youth is exposed to this risk.

According to another study from Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, studies show a 30 percent increase in heart attacks in age groups between 25 and 44 years. It is a cause for concern for all. Hence, consistent medical check-ups could be vital for the player’s welfare.
