The former Liverpool forward, Dean Saunders coached Wrexham from 2008-2011. In an interview, he talked about his time with the club and shared his thoughts on the Hollywood stars taking over an English National League club. How initially, many thought the takeover was a joke.
After seeing Wrexham play against top clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea, He said, “We all thought it was a joke when they took over. But they mean business, and when I see them play Manchester United and Chelsea and the fan clubs in America. I mean, you can’t buy a shirt; we couldn’t sell them when I was manager.”
Saunders also recalled their preseason days at Aberystwyth University, struggling to afford breakfast, saying, “We went to Aberystwyth with and stayed at the University for preseason and 40 quid per man for five days. So the university did us the deal and it was an extra three quid for breakfast and we couldn’t raise that money.”
“So we’re big in Wrexham at the time and we big in Aberystwyth. But now I mean, it’s big all over the world. It’s unbelievable. I’m so pleased though. I’m so pleased because this club is a great club and it’s a big club and I always thought if I could get them into League two, I could get them into the championship and I think they will now. I mean they’ve put the money in, and the two lads mean business, ” added the Welsh football manager.
