For Ben Foster, it’s been quite a journey. Making a comeback from retirement from the sport, he made a telling difference in the hunt for Wrexham AFC’s promotion hopes. Taking the place of the injured Rob Lainton, he played an indispensable role in preserving clean sheets and contributed to the team’s triumph in securing the National League title. After that, he took some time off to decide on his future. But it was a straightforward one to take.

The unified vibes around the city and the club are on a high as Wrexham continues to create ripples amongst the soccer fraternity. In the interview, Foster stated, “I decided probably after the Notts County game that I wanted to keep playing for Wrexham. It was such a special day. For me personally, the 30 seconds of saving the penalty, the ball going out for a corner and then Elliot Lee clearing it off the line — that’s probably as good as it gets.” The game against Notts County in the previous season became crucial for the club’s progress. Wrexham was leading 3-2 when they were awarded a penalty. However, Foster made a remarkable save which helped them secure the victory. That assuredly became the turning point of their season!

He continued, “Honestly, if you could bottle those 30 seconds as adrenaline, you’d have the best time of your life. The highs and lows were just phenomenal. So, after that, I always thought I’d stay but I knew for definite after Boreham Wood.” The team won that match 3-1, handing Wrexham their first promotion after 15 years. The Racecourse Ground erupted as Foster revealed the details. He loved the pitch invasion and how the fans carried him behind their backs.

Can the Welsh club gain back-to-back promotions?

The upcoming season would be crucial for the team’s success. Even though Wrexham returned to the EFL League Two, many soccer fans expect them to jump straight back up. Yet, the injury to Paul Mullin won’t dampen their confidence. The player suffered a punctured lung following a nasty collision with Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Nathan Bishop. Hence, he will be out for six-eight weeks.

Thus, Foster’s leadership qualities would be critical to maintaining a fine headspace for the team. If the mentality is weak, they won’t get promoted. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could hope to see their team carry out the dazzling form. Can they get promoted yet again?
