The US Soccer team qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after a break of eight years. They had last played in the World Cup in 2014 and failed to qualify for the 2028 World Cup. However, they assembled a blend of young ad experienced roster and managed to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. However, they crashed out of the 2022 WC in the Round of 16 after going down against the Netherlands. But they still continue to be in the news due to the USA coach’s rift with Borussia Dortmund & US star Gio Reyna.

Gio Reyna is among the best players to come out of the United States in the past few years. He has established himself among the best youngsters in the European league as he continues to shine for Dortmund. He joined them back in 2019 from NY City FC’s youth side.

Reyne recently made the headlines after reports of his rift with Gregg Berhalter came. The coach was reportedly going to take action against him for his conduct with the team during the national team camp for the World Cup. However, to everyone’s shock, Reyna has recently released a lengthy statement on his social media.
Gio Reyna issues big statement on rift with Berhalter during FIFA WC
Reyna has played 10 games for Dortmund this season in the Bundesliga. However, he barely played in the world cup, with just 7 mins of playing time during the group stages. But Berhalter played him for 45 mins in the team’s R16 loss to the Netherlands. There have been reports of Reyna’s misconduct, to which he has apologized.
Gio Reyna’s statement read: “I hoped not to comment on matters at the World Cup. It is my belief that things that happen in a team setting ought to remain private. That being said, statements have been made that reflect on my professionalism and character, so I feel the need to make a brief statement. Just before the World Cup, Coach Berhalter told me that my role at the tournament would be very limited. I was devasted. I am someone who plays with pride and passion. Soccer is my life, and I believe in my abilities. I fully expected and desperately wanted to contribute to the play of a talented group as we tried to make a statement at the World Cup.”
He continued: “I am also a very emotional person, and I fully acknowledge that I let my emotions get the best of me and affect my training and behavior for a few days after learning about my limited role. I apologized to my teammates and coach for this, and I was told I was forgiven. Thereafter, I shook off my disappointment and gave everything I had on and off the field.”

A week after USMNT’s elimination from the world cup, Reyna started in Dortmund’s friendly game with Rapid Bucuresti. He ended up scoring the winning goal for the German side. He is an important player for Dortmund and already has big teams watching him closely. US soccer and its fans would want the rift to end soon, so the team could plan for the future.
