The arrival of Lionel Messi in Major League Soccer was nothing short of seismic. From the iconic stadiums of Europe to the soccer pitches of the MLS, the Argentine’s presence is felt wherever he goes. However, as the new season edges closer, doubts arise about his inconsistent performances with the Herons. The 8x-Ballon d’Or winner has yet to truly find his rhythm with Inter Miami, raising questions about the league’s ability to challenge him.

In a candid exchange with ESPN, French soccer legend and former Barcelona icon, Thierry Henry, dissected the challenges facing Lionel Messi in the MLS. Henry attributed to the league’s ‘lack of talent,’ linked with the Argentine’s inconsistent performances. “I mean Leo is just unstoppable wherever he goes. He will score goals, and it has nothing to do with the league. But having said that, you know, it’s a new league. I mean how do you battle with history?” Henry stated.

Henry emphasized the difficulties of competing in a league that still struggles to match the level of its European counterparts. He said, “You guys will know, like, the best players are often in Europe. So, you will have those guys playing there and if you don’t have that type of talent, the level will drop. But, the level will drop in a lot of leagues not only in the MLS.”

This lack of top-tier talent across the board, as Henry argued, can lead to a drop in the overall level of American soccer, impacting even the legends of the game like Lionel Messi. It points out that while the Argentine’s individual brilliance remains unmatched, even he needs a supporting cast to elevate his game.

Lionel Messi promises maximum commitment to Inter Miami and the MLS

Despite the MLS’ perceived shortcomings, Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami has been nothing short of a spectacle. Messi’s contribution to Inter Miami’s success, including winning the inaugural Leagues Cup and clinching the tournament’s Golden Boot, underscores his influence on the game. Lionel Messi has scored 11 goals and provided 5 assists in 14 games for the Herons until now.

The former Barcelona star stated previously, “I will always try to compete to the maximum. I am also aware that I went to a lesser league, but a lot happens because of the personal and the way one faces it and competes. As long as I feel that I’m fine and I can continue contributing.

As Inter Miami prepares for the upcoming MLS season, Messi’s commitment to delivering excellence remains unwavering. While Thierry Henry’s comments shed light on the challenges faced by the Argentine star, Messi’s presence continues to elevate the league’s profile. All eyes will be on Lionel Messi when Inter Miami returns to action once again against his boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys.
