As per Opta data, the ball in play time reduced with tier in English soccer. According to Opta, it was around 54 minutes for the Premier League and 52 minutes for the Championship (second division). But, when it came to EFL League One and Two, it was 50 and 48 minutes, respectively, compared to the regulation 90 minutes. As a result, EFL worked on it, and they found that long throw-ins resulted in time wasting.

The players use a towel to dry the ball before the throw-ins. To stop players from doing so, EFL proposed a rule to ban the towels during the throw-ins. The member clubs voted in favor of the regulation during EFL’s AGM. Now players won’t be allowed to use the towels to dry the balls. However, to help the layers take the throw-ins quickly, EFL will introduce a multiball system.

It aims to speed up the play by placing balls in designated pitch-side positions. Meanwhile, it hasn’t gone down well with Wrexham captain Ben Tozer.

Is the Wrexham AFC captain unhappy with the new rule by EFL?

Tozer, whose brother recently won 82 times more money during gambling in Las Vegas, is fresh after the Las Vegas celebrations. He will play a massive role for the club next season in League Two. Ben Tozer has used long throw-ins quite brilliantly in his career.

It has been his weapon, especially during crucial times. Now, without towels, it will affect him. “I might have upset someone in the EFL because they’re trying to ruin my career. I nearly had to hand my retirement straight away. I understand it because some people see it as anti-football, but it’s part of football,” Tozer said to The Leader.

“Throw-ins are just like a corner or a penalty, they are set pieces. We had a bit of an advantage, but there are ways around everything, and I’ve got the shirt that I’m wearing. I can still dry the ball with that. I’m sure there will be other ways around it as well, but it’s just one of those things you just have to get on with,” Tozer added on finding new ways to do so.
