Misery has become a way of life for Manchester United. The Premier League side continues to suffer on the domestic front. While there are a lot of reasons for their constant downfall, the blame has now been solely directed towards their new keeper, Andre Onana, as his coach Erik ten Hag has been urged to bench the shot-stopper.

Additionally, the Red Devils are in contention to witness an early exit from Europe. They are at the bottom of Group A and have accumulated just four points from five games.

Manchester United’s struggles recently became a topic of discussion on the latest podcast of talkSPORT. Rory Jennings slammed ten Hag for keeping Andre Onana in the starting XI. The commentator then blamed the Cameroonian for United’s exit from the Champions League. He said, “If anybody knows why are they not in the Champions League in January, the answer is Andre Onana.”

Jennings insisted that United won just a single game, which was consequently Onana’s good game as he saved the penalty to help his side clinch an away victory against Copenhagen. However, in the other games, the 27-year-old has been “launching the ball into his own net,” which contributed to United’s loss. “They’re out because of him. How does that not justify having your place taken away from you?” he added.

“You cannot play that badly that often and expect to keep your place in the team. I think that ten Hag needs to drop him because I don’t think he’s giving out the right message to the rest of the team either,” he concluded.

Indeed, these are some bold claims from Jennings. Ironically, just recently, ten Hag backed the former Ajax goalkeeper as the second-best goalkeeper in the English League.

Erik ten Hag backs Andre Onana as the second-best keeper in the PL

After United’s 3-3 draw against Galatasary, ten Hag made some bold claims about Onana. He said, “If you analyse it well then you see he is the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on stats.” Apparently, his words are true, as looking at Opta, Onana has thwarted 3.67 goals in the current league season.

Thomas Kaminski from Luton Town is the only goalkeeper with a perfect record, preventing 6.3 goals. Onana shares the lead in Premier League clean sheets with five, alongside Sam Johnstone of Crystal Palace and Nick Pope of Newcastle.
