After a successful pre-season tour in America, many expected Wrexham to have a bright start to their League 2 campaign. But shockingly, the Red Dragons have been below par so far. They started their season with an astounding 5-3 loss against MK Dons. The Welsh team then sparked a positive comeback in the Carabao Cup with a first-round victory. However, that form seems to not be translating to League 2.
On 12th August, the Red Dragons faced off against AFC Wimbledon in the second match of their campaign. Much to Wrexham fans’ disappointment, they went winless again. However, what irked fans the most is the bizarre reason cited by boss Phil Parkinson for yet another disappointment.

After a positive performance in the EFL Cup against Wigan Athletic, many expected Wrexham to repeat the feat in the League. However, their match ended in a stalemate 1-1 against AFC Wimbledon. In his post-match presser, the 55-year-old gaffer first expressed his disappointment.
Football team plays ball forward, acts “old fashioned” (eg?) and leaves grass long. Old Wimbledon must back if teams failing to beat us are coming up with that as reason for failure. Inject it into me, twice. pic.twitter.com/VlTNOB0jHx

Then when quipped the reason behind a disappointing outing, Parkinson bizarrely blamed long grass as the reason. “I am very very disappointed with the performance,” said Phil. “It is a difficult place to come. They left the grass long, they look to go forward and are an old-fashioned team,” bizarrely said the Wrexham gaffer.
The Reds remained levelled thanks to Ben Foster’s heroic penalty save in the second half. If not, Wimbledon could’ve handed the Red Dragons yet another loss in League 2. Phil Parkinson, however, disagreed with the notion that his counterparts outperformed them. He believed that Wimbledon benefitted immensely from sub-par officiating.

After blaming the long grass, the gaffer then went on a rant about the poor officiating standards. Parkinson, in his rant, insinuated that the referees may have been going easier on the home team than the Welsh side. While he did accept that penalty calls were valid, the Wrexham fan favorite also felt that the same calls weren’t given to them in Wimbledon’s penalty area.
“If everyone looks at the decision when the penalties went against us, you can probably make a case for the officials to say it was a penalty,” said Phil. “But in terms of what had been going on in both penalty boxes throughout the game, to pick those moments out for the penalties was incredible,” opined the gaffer.
