The world of sports can oftentimes unite people from different backgrounds and cultures. This universal language not only provides entertainment but also brings people together. Take the case of American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who took over Wrexham AFC, a Welsh football club that was struggling for over a decade.

Their involvement has given the club and its fans new hope, and they have become quite popular within the soccer community. The effect has also been mutual as being part of a soccer community filled with such passion for the sport has also made the actors fall in love with this beautiful sport and the community of Wrexham. However, McElhenney recently found himself at the center of a heated rant regarding what to call the sport he loves.

Rob McElhenney recently sat down in a podcast with fellow ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ co-star Glenn Howerton. Having recently seen his team earn promotion to EFL League Two, McElhenney can’t stop talking about Wrexham. Speaking on the podcast too led to a discussion on whether to call the sport soccer or football.

This heated debate over what to call the sport has raged on for years. While soccer is the more popular term in the US, football is the more widely used term in most other parts of the world. During the podcast discussion, McElhenney made a point about how many commercials are shown during American football games compared to soccer matches.

“If I’m watching what Americans call ‘soccer’ there are no commercials,” McElhenney said. He was then asked whether he calls the sport soccer or football. He replied that he uses the term football instead of soccer because “They (Wrexham fans) get angry” if he doesn’t call it that.

Ryan Reynolds also once gave a similar response regarding this question. The comments from McElhenney did not sit well with his co-star Glenn Howerton, who proceeded to go on a full-blown rant. This infuriated him so much that he started taking shots at British soccer fans.

“For the record, it used to be called soccer in England as well. I don’t know why they get so angry?” said Howerton. He further added, “They’re the ones who invented it! The damn sport and called it ‘soccer’”. The debate over what to call the sport may seem like a petty argument, but it is an important issue for the millions of fans who love the game.
