Is the 'fat American' stereotype in European soccer just banter, or does it cross the line?

Banter is an integral part of sports and soccer is no exception. Fans, whether in the stadium or on the internet, never fall short of firing friendly shots against rival supporters or even players for that case. But who would have thought there was an apparent jesting against the Americans across various parts of Europe? Well, hear out from USMNT star Tyler Adams, who has been through the wringer while playing for Bournemouth in England.

Before his nation endured a premature exit within the group stages of Copa America 2024, Adams sat down for a brief interview with Goal USA, hosted by former Canadian player and young digital creator Raheem Taylor-Parkes. The ex-skipper was asked if there’s any wildest way the Europeans banter with the Americans over in Europe. Interestingly, the midfielder replied, “They just call us fat. Everyone just says, ‘You’re Fat.’ They are like, ‘Why you guys eat so much fast food’ and stuff like that.”

However, Adams was quick to fire back at the Europeans over this banter. The 25-year-old, who has enjoyed spells with English sides Leeds and now Bournemouth, as well as with German side RB Leipzig, revealed that the fast food lines in Germany and England are similar to those in America. “You drive by a McDonalds in the UK or in Germany and it’s packed. It’s the same thing,” he chuckled.

It turns out that the English and Germans are quite the foodies themselves, just like the Americans. Adams should keep an eye out, as England fans will be waiting for him when he returns to Bournemouth next month. However, they should go easy on the USA star, considering he is coming off by turning the pages of a rather heartbreaking chapter.

Tyler Adams and his teammates blamed for Copa America 2024 heartbreak

The USMNT is still under the hot seat over their Copa America exit even before making it to the knockout stages. While questions are still being asked about their poor performance, iconic player Alexi Lalas placed the entire blame on the USMNT players. Despite acknowledging the talent of this golden generation, he remarked, “I think they are better soccer players, but ultimately I don’t think that they are better USMNT players.”

Lalas claimed that while each player is individually talented, they become invisible when it comes to representing the national team. Notably, the USMNT’s journey in the tournament was a bag of mixed balls. After winning the opening fixture against Bolivia, they lost the subsequent games against Panama and Uruguay, failing to make the required top two spot to make it to the quarter-finals.
