The new season of NWSL is in full swing. This season, however, has come with a surge of excitement not felt before in the league. Much of the newfound energy has been due to the San Diego Wave and their star player, Alex Morgan.

This year the NWSL broke the record for the average audience in its opening weekend. An average of 15,002 fans filled the stands, which was a sizeable jump from the previous year’s attendance of 10,150.

The Wave undoubtedly contributed to this impressive number, as their first match set a record for the largest attendance at an NWSL home opener with 30,854 fans in the crowd.

The success of San Diego has not only increases the NWSL’s exposure but also the league’s potential, as described by Jill Ellis, San Diego Wave President.

These attendance numbers are not arbitrary – they have real implications for the overall success of the NWSL. With the number of fans in attendance increasing, the league is bound to see an increase in sponsorships and revenue. Jill Ellis was quick to point out the importance of her team’s success. “As a former coach, you’re like ‘Oh yeah, there’s a game going on,’ but I’m just so proud that there’s 30,000+ in the stands,” Ellis said. “There’s other things now I’m realizing. Success is maximizing what our potential is. How do we do that?”

She further added, “It’s increasing our sponsorship. It’s revenue, it’s making sure our fan experience is going to be innovative and not stale. It’s making sure our community really feels we’re not just expecting them to show up, but we want to show up for them”.

Alex Morgan and The Wave have achieved something big this season. Further testament to this is OL Reingns home opener game against San Diego Wave. The Reigns were successful in achieving a new club home opener attendance record of 9,219.
