A 15-year-old exile from Football League ends on August 5. From the perils of extinction in 2011 to getting a promotion, the soccer club and its fans have seen it all. What seemed impossible years ago will come to reality on August 5. Yes, we are talking about Wrexham AFC.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney turned the fortunes of the club struggling in the fifth-tier of English soccer. The COVID pandemic posed massive challenges, but the Hollywood duo did a significant job in transitioning the club. And here they are, in the Football League Two, and will compete for another promotion. That is what Phil Parkinson has warned the League Two rivals.

Parkinson welcomed the player for the preseason a few days back. The preparations are underway for the US tour that starts on July 19 against Chelsea. Three days later, they will play LA Galaxy II. They will play another enticing game on July 25 against Manchester United before wrapping it up on July 28 against Philadelphia Union II.

Meanwhile, Phil Parkinson has warned EFL League Two clubs, including Salford City (co-owned by David Beckham). Parkinson feels the players and the club’s focus is on moving forward. “I firmly believe there is more for quite a few of the players to improve on last season. I am excited about seeing the progression of a lot of our players in the EFL,” Parkinson said.

The Wrexham boss feels there’s a nice balance in the squad. “Some have played at a higher level – League One level – and there are others, who are coming into the EFL for the first time like, Jacob Mendy. So, it’s great to see their development. Everybody got feel for the spirit we had, not just in the group of players but within the club in general,” Parkinson added.

There is a real determination to keep us on an upward curve.”
