The debate the world loves. Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo. The debate is back again. For years, fans, celebrities, players, pundits, and the whole soccer fraternity wanted a solution. But they never got it as these two gave performances beyond anyone’s imagination on a consistent basis. However, the 2022 Qatar World Cup may prove to be the difference in the debate, as players are slightly sliding toward the Argentinian. That includes ex-Manchester United soccer players too.

Former Manchester United player, Kieran Richardson, showed allegiance to the World Cup winner instead of his former teammate. Therefore, the whole complexity of the debate changed after Messi’s World Cup win. In a recent podcast with Steven Sulley, Richardson revealed why he thinks Messi is the GOAT.

In the podcast, Richardson mentioned, “They’re both the GOATs. But, if I had to pick one, then I have to pick Messi, even though I know Ronaldo, I’ve played with Ronaldo, I love Ronaldo. They’re both amazing, they’re both GOATs.” Furthermore, Richardson explained how people kept doubting Messi if he failed to win the World Cup. Yet, he won the trophy in style, scoring seven goals and providing three assists.

Now that the trophy is his, Lionel Messi will have a slight edge over Ronaldo in the GOAT debate. But take nothing away from Ronaldo. From being a gangly teenager, he developed into a physical monster. Scoring goals for fun became customary, and he broke several records in his soccer career.

Richardson, in the meantime, rose through the ranks from the Manchester United academy and became a regular starter in the squad. He made 81 appearances for the Red Devils and played with Ronaldo for several years.

Back before Messi won the World Cup, Ronaldo had a slight edge over the Argentinian after winning the European Championships in 2016. He’s won five Ballon d’Ors and 32 trophies in his illustrious career. After dominating Europe, he signed for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr and signed a $213 million contract.

Winning the World Cup probably would give him the edge, but these two completely dominated the game from start to finish. They are two of the best players of their generation, and we might not witness two great soccer players battling it out for decades. Hence, the GOAT debate goes on and on. Hopefully, the new-gen soccer players will make a change. Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are on their way to the top.
