This season, the NWSL has witnessed some remarkable changes on the pitch. The roster has expanded from 8 to 14, Nike Dri-FIT ADV technology has resulted in enhanced kits, and VAR has been introduced as well. All in all, this makes for a much better viewing experience. Furthermore, a lot of development is happening behind the scenes, namely NWSL’s own reality show, ‘The Offseason‘, an offering from Angel City FC co-owner and Serena Williams’ partner Alexis Ohanian and NWSL star Midge Purce. But what motivated them to launch the first-of-its-kind show? Ohanian tells the tale.

In the podcast with Front Office Sports Today, Alexis Ohanian revealed the question that led to the creation of The Offseason.  He questioned why such stories weren’t being told in the first place. According to the Angel City FC owner, “Women are so much better at being the focal point of this kind of television.” Per Ohanian, this is also the reason why he finds women’s sports more entertaining.

He added, “You don’t have to look too far on social media to see the numbers right? In terms of follower count, in terms of engagement. New generation of athletes that is digital native, the women are kicking men’s a**.” Alexis Ohanian believes that the increasing popularity of women’s sports is already being seen in NCAA, basketball, and more. However, this is true even in the NWSL.
