Of what use is having more ball possession than the rival when you can’t score goals and win the game? This question hangs over the USWNT after their shocking defeat against Mexico. The US team’s veteran forward Alex Morgan lamented the loss, saying the CONCACAF competitions are not what they used to be 14 years ago. Notably, it has been 14 years since the US last lost to Mexico. If CONCACAF has changed for the better to be more competitive, the USWNT changed for the worse, hinted a bunch of soccer analysts on ESPN.
The USWNT now awaits a clash against Columbia in the W Gold Cup’s quarter-final. Since Columbia had a better run than the USWNT at the 2023 World Cup, the said analysts warned Morgan and Co. to be better prepared.

The USWNT’s 2-0 loss against Mexico was the talking point in a recent ESPN FC episode. The host Dan Thomas said, “It’s interesting Alex Morgan saying CONCACAF isn’t what it used to be, or is it the USWNT isn’t what it used to be.” “I think it is more of the USWNT is not what it used to be,” said Colombian player Sebastian Salazar in reply. Salazar said Mexico outclassed the mighty US side, despite not qualifying for the last two World Cups. “The US didn’t just lose this match. It’s not just a bad result. It’s a desperately bad performance,” he added.
Salazar revealed that the US team has never been dominated to this extent in recent times. “They got outplayed every metric. More shots on target for Mexico. Nine to one edge in corners for Mexico. We’ve seen the US lose to Mexico before. In soccer, anything can happen. We’ve never seen the US get played off the field like they did last night,” Salazar added. Thereafter, the Colombian warned the USWNT that their strategy could cost them more games in the tournament including the knockout tie.

In the game against Mexico, USWNT maintained more than 60% possession. Nevertheless, Mexico had more shots on goal and many more corners than the US. Salazar lamented the US side misfiring, despite having Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman in their forward fleet. Besides, Twila Kilgore used veteran Alex Morgan, who came off the bench, to end the scoring woe. Even Morgan failed to redeem the 2019 World Champions.

“It is the exact same script that what we saw in the World Cup. Lots of the ball and very little to show for,” Sebastian Salazar said. Furthermore, he predicted the team’s doom against Columbia in the quarter-final, if they fail to create and score. Alex Morgan and Co. will play the knockout tie against Columbia on March 04 in LA.
