In 2022, Lionel Messi led his team to victory in the Qatar World Cup, a momentous achievement that fulfilled his childhood dream and brought the trophy back to Argentina. Despite his many accomplishments, there is one trophy that has continued to elude Messi: the Copa Libertadores. At the latest draw for the competition, CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez reminded Messi of this fact, making the ceremony all the more memorable.

In recognition of his remarkable achievements in the world of soccer, the Argentinian player was awarded a statue to be displayed in the CONMEBOL museum. Positioned alongside him in the exhibit were two other legendary players, Pele and Diego Maradona. But, the talking point was the president’s claims of Messi not having the prestigious club competition trophy in South America.

The president kept the World Cup trophy in his hand as he commented, “The only cup you’re missing is the Libertadores.” Safe to say, he made a valid point. In 2000, Lionel Messi bid farewell to his beloved boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, and embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining Barcelona. Little did he know, he was going to become the G.O.A.T. There is light at the end of the tunnel. His contract with PSG will expire soon, and a return to this boyhood club would get him the trophy he needs.

Many clubs circle him for his signature. Teams from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the MLS are all rumoured to be interested in securing his signature, making Messi one of the hottest prospects on the market. Thus, Messi looks like he will decide at the end of the season. While he weighs his options and decides on his next move, PSG is making a concerted effort to keep him on board for at least one more season. All this is being done to keep the trio of Kylian Mbappe, Messi, and Neymar intact. In terms of the trophies won, Messi won everything.

Apart from all the club trophies, the one trophy that he dearly wanted was the World Cup. He finally got his hands on the trophy after the disappointment of 2014. After reaching the final, Argentina lost to Germany in the final of the 2014 World Cup. Thus, it became an extraordinary moment in his career. After Argentina failed to win a major trophy in 2014, he won Copa America in 2021. It became a massive relief and kickstarted the World Cup campaign. And now the list looks mesmerizing, adding an Olympic gold medal in 2008.
