This season’s Premier League title race continues to take exciting twists and turns. Last night’s showdown saw Liverpool clinch an emphatic 3-1 victory against Sheffield United at Anfield. The victory helped the Reds climb back to the top of the table, surpassing both Arsenal and Manchester City. In the aftermath of this crucial victory, Jamie Carragher has revealed the key factor that sets his former club apart from their rivals, saying that ‘subs make the difference.’

The CBS pundit took to X to heap praise on his former side’s dominance in the table while also acknowledging the choice of substitutes from head coach Jurgen Klopp. Following the match, he tweeted, “Once again this season, the Liverpool subs make the difference, Klopp has utilised the 5 sub rule better than anyone.”

Notably, Liverpool took the lead in just 17 minutes, thanks to a strike from Darwin Nunez. However, minutes after the second half began, right-back Conor Bradley scored an own goal to break the deadlock for Chris Wilder’s side. Interestingly, eyebrows were raised after the former Dortmund coach replaced Mohamed Salah with Harvey Elliott in the 60th minute, while simultaneously replacing Ryan Gravenberch with Andy Robertson. Moreover, the Egyptian himself expressed his discontent as he came off to sit on the bench.

Yet, the decision proved fruitful as former Brighton man Alexis Mac Allister added a second. As the match was about to end, substitute Cody Gapko, who replaced defender Joe Gomez, added a third goal to seal the victory for his side. The victory was enough to support Carragher’s assertion regarding the significance of Klopp’s substitutions. However, despite keeping Liverpool at the top, the question remains whether they can maintain their form to secure their second title under Klopp.

After winning the Carabao Cup last month, Liverpool is keen to extend its silverware haul. Since the beginning of the season, the Reds have been rallying to stay at the top of the table. Currently, they have a 2-point lead over Arsenal and a 3-point lead against City. Hence, if Jurgen Klopp and Co. are able to keep their momentum in the league, there is no stopping them from lifting the title. Moreover, with the German boss leaving, it would be a well-deserved adieu.

However, it’s impossible for them to neglect the Europa League after they made the quarterfinals. Additionally, their FA Cup journey coming to an end gives them just the PL and the Europa League. On the other hand, Pep Guardiola‘s side has the pressure to perform in the PL, Champions League and FA Cup, giving Merseyside an advantage. Certainly, Liverpool can capitalize on City’s lengthy domestic calendar and use it to their advantage to keep producing results in the league.
