Did Alex Morgan's farewell match live up to her legendary status, or was it too much hype?

The world hasn’t been so kind to USWNT legend Alex Morgan since the 2023 World Cup crash. Within a year- a year riddled with injuries, Morgan got snubbed from the USWNT’s Olympic squad which ultimately won the gold medal. Since Morgan has decided it is time to hang her boots, the soccer world is busy honoring the two-time World champion. The NWSL has historically been telling stories about dramatic ticket sales. Well, here’s a new one the women’s league could boast about, as fans plan to overflood the Snapdragon stadium in Morgan’s farewell match on Sunday.

Alex Morgan, who is now expecting a second child, will play her final soccer game on Sunday when the San Diego Wave takes on the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL. Seems like no soccer fan from the Bay Area wants to miss the 35-year-old’s swan song. As per an update from the X page, San Diego. Futbol, the Wave sold 6,000 tickets in just three hours after Alex Morgan announced on X that she’s retiring.

The update also says that the general admission tickets have been sold out at the Snapdragon stadium. The club will also possibly open its 200 section to house the mammoth crowd during Morgan’s farewell match. Besides, despite huge demands, there is no chance for the USWNT to give a farewell match to Morgan. Firstly, Morgan’s decision seems a clear one, considering she is expecting a child again. So it is least surprising to see a raucous bunch of soccer fans being eager to watch the two-time World champion in the NWSL once.

Fans salute the crowd puller in Alex Morgan before her retirement

Now, it’s the era of the triple espresso. There was no Alex Morgan. No Megan Rapinoe, when the USWNT clinched the 2024 Olympic gold. Rodman, Swanson, and Smith just peaked in the absence of these legends. Yet, Morgan still means business. The San Diego’s ticket sales are a testament to the weight her name bears in women’s soccer. And fans are getting crazy and emotional about Morgan’s farewell in a jam-packed Snapdragon stadium.

“This is the Alex Morgan effect,” a fan wrote, reacting to San Diego. Futbol’s post.

For this fan, the potential mammoth crowd at the Snapdragon is least surprising. Well, Morgan has been an NWSL titlist, Shield winner, Golden Boot winner, and Challenge Cup champion. So, why would anyone hesitate to catch a glimpse of her final action?

As we said, the past year has not been the ideal one for Morgan. Injuries, World Cup exit, and Olympic snub, all had a role in keeping Morgan out of the limelight. But she seems to be getting the farewell she deserves.

Indeed, a tear-jerking moment for most soccer fans to imagine the game without Morgan. The two-time World champion has a legacy that goes beyond the USWNT and the NWSL. She always went the extra mile for the betterment of women’s soccer and also inspired the coming generation to kick the ball.

Morgan’s farewell game’s importance aside, it is paramount that the Wave wins during the weekend. Consistent winless streaks have damaged the Wave’s run at the current NWSL season, as they plummeted to the 12th spot in the league table.
