The recent World Cup exit of the US Women’s National Team (USWNT) left both players and fans disheartened and disappointed. As one of the key members of the team, Alex Morgan felt the pain of their early elimination from the competition.

Prior to the World Cup, the USWNT had been considered favorites to win, given their dominance in the last two cups and their drive for a historic three-peat. However, their underwhelming performance in the group stages and failure to advance past Sweden in the round of 16 shattered their hopes. Morgan’s personal experience of the defeat was particularly emotional, but she found solace in her daughter.

Alex Morgan did not get the chance to play the full match against Sweden. She was substituted in the 99th minute to make way for Megan Rapinoe. From the bench, she had to watch as her teammates lost the penalty shootout. After the match, the sight of Morgan crying and walking toward her family on the field touched the hearts of many.

“I was just telling her how much I love her,” Morgan shared, her voice tinged with raw emotion. “And that I’m going to be spending a lot more time with her this next week or two and moving forward. I didn’t get a lot of time to spend with her the last month and a half”. For Morgan “that’s the only silver lining”.

The 34-year-old also shared her plans going forward. “I’m just gonna take these next few days to process what just happened,” Morgan revealed. “Then get back to San Diego, and we have a lot of work to do there”. While the disappointment of the World Cup exit may linger, Morgan’s priorities remain clear. In addition to Alex Morgan’s comments, let’s also look at what another veteran Megan Rapinoe had to say following the loss.

Unfortunately, Rapinoe’s missed penalty in the shootout resulted in the team’s loss. This defeat holds significant weight for her as well, as it marked her final appearance for the USWNT due to her retirement announcement. During a post-match interview, Rapinoe expressed her thoughts on the game, stating, “I thought we played really well. I’m so happy for us that we went out like that. Playing the way that we did”.
