After a disappointing start to the season, Wrexham just faced Wigan Athletic in the first round of the EFL Carabao Cup. For the first time since 2008, the Welsh soccer club made an appearance in the competition. The Red Dragons could not find the back of the net in the 90 minutes. In fact, both sides failed to score, ultimately resulting in Wrexham snatching the win in the penalty shootout.
Without a doubt, Reynolds’ side will face higher-quality teams this season. While things definitely won’t be easy, the presence of Paul Mullin was thoroughly missed today, again. Quite a few fans reiterated the concern surrounding his absence after the game was done.

Wrexham kept possession of the ball for most of the first half. In fact, the Red Dragons had more shots on target too but failed to convert any of them into a goal. Both teams walked back into a tunnel with a 0-0 scoreline. How often does that happen at a Wrexham game? Wigan Athletic came back strongly in the second half. Despite dominating possession of the ball, even they couldn’t score.
Shockingly, at the 70th-minute mark, the scoresheet still had two zeroes on it. With about fifteen minutes to go, Reynolds’ side had already made their five substitutions in the hunt for a possible winner. But it just wasn’t happening for them. The game went on to a penalty shootout and Wrexham narrowly pulled off a win after scoring four out of four penalty kicks. Here’s how the fans reacted.
It was a tough watch for sure. The Welsh soccer club failed to convert even one of their twenty shots during the game into a goal.
Jesus lads that was painful to watch

Quite a few fans commented on the absence of Paul Mullin. Today, Reynolds’ side just couldn’t find the finishing touch!
17 total goal attempts so far and can’t score. Truly can’t score without mullin. Wigan 1-0 win incoming.

Think we need one more striker lads, missing Mullin’s killer instinct.

Definitely, a safer way to win this game would be to pinch in a late goal. But that wasn’t written in the script. The Red Dragons are all about battling through tense situations. In this case, it was the penalty shootout.
Never should have went to penalties with some actual attempts at scoring instead of kicking it right at the keeper

While it turned out to be a close encounter, a fan appreciated the team’s efforts for mainly ‘putting in a shift’ and getting the result.
@VancityReynolds @RMcElhenney your boys put in a shift tonight. So happy they are through to the next round proud of them 👍 https://t.co/JmmXunCnqP

All in all, this game turned into a mini nail-biter in the end. Mainly because a goalless 90 minutes meant that the result was then down to penalties. The Welsh soccer club turned out to be the better team from the spot and snatched victory to proceed to the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Even after losing 3-5 to MK Dons on the opening day of their EFL League Two, the fans have still been optimistic. The soccer fanbase considered it to be a major eye-opener for everyone at the club. Reynolds’s club had a decent preseason in the US but ended up losing their main goal scorer, Paul Mullin. His recovery from a punctured lung will take a few weeks for sure.
However, Parkinson will look to gain as much momentum as possible from the home advantage they have at the beginning of the season. Jacob Mendy, Jordan Davies, and Anthony Forde impressed with goals against MK Dons. A few days ago, the club announced the signing of James McClean. The transfer window is still open and Reynolds could make a few more purchases to tighten up his squad.
