It was in November 2023 that the Chelsea FC women’s team faced a shock. A legendary manager who changed the unit’s history would not coach them from next season. Hence, they had to look out for another leader for guidance. Emma Hayes may have left the club but, she made sure that the club will be under the safe hand of Sonia Bompastor. Known for multiple achievements in very little time, the French coach has already been given huge expectations that Hayes left with the club. But before her effort begins, the manager has assured her that she has the armory to ‘meet the goals,’ also drawing parallels with NBA legend Stephen Curry.
The Women’s Game Podcast has recently interviewed Bompastor who bloomed with confidence about her upcoming venture. Asked about her preparation for bearing a big burden, she stated, “I think first of all I have to say I have so much respect for Emma’s Legacy. She just left me the team and the club in such a great place so it’s really good for me to start from this base.” It has been just three years since the former French international has taken up a coaching role. But the club’s support and its current position will be an advantage, despite the pressure coming in.
Chelsea has been the number-one team in England for the past many years. Winning everything in their way except the European Championship, they grabbed 16 titles under the Englishwoman. This also had 7 league titles including 5 on the trot in the last five years, and 5 FA Cup titles. Subsequently, Hayes signed the most expensive contract for a women’s coach in soccer with the USWNT, leaving a GOAT heritage.

However, despite all Hayes has done, Bompastor will figure her own way. She further stated, “I’m coming with my new vision trying to find the good balance between what they have been doing, and they had so much success and what I can bring to the team.” Moreover, the 44-year-old has incredible self-belief which is also expected to help.
Sonia Bompastor compared with Stephen Curry to continue what Emma Hayes left
There is a lot of mystery about how the new era would shape up for the Blues. But the former OL coach expressed her aim to win all that comes her way. This includes going one step ahead of Hayes by winning the Champions League. Host Sam Mewis claimed this to be ‘Steph Curry’s level of confidence’ who is known for his faith in shooting. Subsequently, praising the club, the Frenchwoman replied saying, “Chelsea is the club to be. At the moment they have such great ambitions. They support women which is something really special for me and they have all the infrastructure.”
On the other hand, Bompastor already knows what it takes to win big tournaments. She was the first woman to win the European championship both as a player and a coach with Olympic Lyon. Additionally, she helped OL win three French Leagues in succession along with three other major trophies. But, with the challenge expected to be more stringent in England, the former Washington Freedom player could press further. Starting her spell with a win against Arsenal recently in a friendly, can she replicate her heroics like she did in France remains a question.
