Is Pulisic right? Should Pochettino take more risks to elevate USMNT's game?

The day has finally arrived. Mauricio Pochettino took over the reins of the USMNT and hopes to lead the team to a glorious new era. With an incredible portfolio of managing elite soccer clubs, he would be keen to manage his first international job and set a higher standard for the USMNT. And boy, do they really need to raise the bar! In fact, they drew their game against New Zealand, 1-1, a team that ranks 94th in the world rankings. This sparks the need for a change in the process. Leading the battle cry for a radical transformation in mentality is star player, Christian Pulisic.

In a post-game interview, the 71x capped American star detailed how the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino’s hiring would impact the team. He stated, “Yeah, I think just a, hopefully, a culture that is willing to fight. That is willing to take risks. Win. I mean, there’s a lot of things that need to be changed.” Notably, the game against New Zealand showed the distance they had to go to reach their targets. Despite having 67% possession, they mustered just 5 shots on target out of the 17 shots on goal. The lack of finishing deeply affected the team’s ability to score goals. It was a strong team, mind you. They had the likes of Folarin Balogun, Yunus Musah, and Ricardo Pepi, who are well-capable in making the difference.

He continued, “Just the mentality and the culture of the group. I think we have the quality. But hopefully, I know, that’s the first thing he will want to change.” Significantly, it would be incredible to see the team perform under him with the Argentine coach arriving. But, he has a lot of work to do before one gets excited. Yes, years of poor performances and a change in mentality remain the key for the USMNT. But the good news is – Mauricio Pochettino finally arrived after several weeks of excitement.

Mauricio Pochettino finally signs for USMNT

The former Tottenham coach will be delighted to sign the deal after dealing with the complicated compensation issues with Chelsea. The manager spoke to the press regarding the appointment and looks satisfied to sign the contract.

He continued, “The energy, the passion, and the hunger to achieve something truly historic here – those are the things that inspired me. The opportunity to lead the U.S. Men’s National Team, in front of fans who are just as passionate as the players, is something I couldn’t pass up.” For a person who has not managed an international team before, he enters unchartered waters. Thus, take a plunge and you will get sucked into the negativity. Give it some time, Pochettino could bring success to the USMNT.
