Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have arguably made soccer a greater institution than ever before. Both started their careers in Europe but have moved on to other regions, perhaps, reducing their ambitions slightly. However, their legacy has been stamped firmly for the upcoming generation to pluck. Notably, for Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland. One of the recent World Cup stars voiced his trust in Kylian Mbappe to take up the mantle.

Before thinking about the next generational stars, it should be noted what Messi and Ronaldo have left is a huge mountain to climb. The youngsters of this day, like Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, and even Kevin De Bruyne, are great achievers. When asked about the three players who will be the best in the decade after Messi and Ronaldo, Enzo Fernandez, the Chelsea midfielder, did not have an easy solution. He said, “It’s very hard to say it, but I think Kylian Mbappe is that type of player.”

At 24, Kylian Mbappe has a great blend of domestic and international achievements, including the 2018 World Cup and five French Ligue 1 titles. Trophies aside, Mbappe also has a great playing style with high speed and dribbling prowess, which help him sneak past the best of defenses.

Enzo, who played against Mbappe in two UEFA Champions League games and a World Cup final, had a positive opinion of the French star. The presenter had asked him to list three players as successors to Messi and Ronaldo. The Argentine midfielder could only mention one. We may think of players like Erling Haaland with his European POTY, Vinicius Junior, and Jude Bellingham, but these picks might not stand the test of time.

Difficult to find replacements for Messi and Ronaldo

The achievements and records of Messi and Ronaldo speak volumes. They have 12 Ballon d’Ors combined, with 7 to Messi and 5 to Ronaldo in 20 years. They both have an incredible goal-scoring record. Ronaldo is the highest goalscorer of all time, with Messi expected to catch up soon. Also, they both have won 9 UEFA Champions Leagues combined and many league-level records.
