Did Emma Hayes' Olympic snub push Alex Morgan into retirement? What's your take on this?

Little did anyone know how Emma Hayes would snub Alex Morgan for the Paris Olympics 2024. She was the team’s crucial player for several years, using her technical ability and leadership qualities to lead the team forward. Yet, when she received the axe, Morgan had doubts in her mind about her soccer career and announced her retirement.

Yes! In the latest episode of A Touch More by Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird, Alex Morgan joined by keeping her valuable time aside to detail her retirement plans. Moreover, those plans came out of her Olympic snub by Alex Morgan, as she received the confirmation for her career.

Alex Morgan clarified how she conversed with her husband, Servando Carrasco, before making a final decision about her career. They talked about retirement dates, spending more time with family, and life after soccer. So, she already had it on her mind, how 2024 became the final chapter of her glorious soccer career. Like an RKO outta nowhere, Emma Hayes decided to snub the legendary forward. Those retirement plans accelerated since then.

Alex Morgan mentioned, “Fast forward to this summer, things didn’t go how I wanted in terms of the Olympics. It was a little bit crazy. I kind of just stopped to like being so crazy and such like a, I don’t know, you know P and Sue like that. Just the idea that an athlete has to do every little thing right and you have to like, literally be thinking of it from sun up to sun down.” 

It’s true that athletes, even after all those years, still possess the motivation to push themselves even harder. But sometimes it gets strenuous. Therefore, she decided to hang up her cleats.

Mogan continued, “So, when that decision came, in late January, about not making the Olympics, I was just like; I am just gonna enjoy this summer. And I am gonna stop stressing and little did I know!”

Notably, Morgan played her final match in the San Diego Waves’ 4-1 loss to the North Carolina Courage. After announcing the retirement, the 35-year-old, to raucous applause, got substituted in the 13th minute (her favorite jersey number). Despite having a penalty to score a goal in her farewell match, it didn’t become the fairytale ending, as the opposition goalkeeper saved the kick.

The Snapdragon Stadium in southern California saw people in tears as she inspired most of them to watch soccer matches. She addressed the fans after the game, reminiscing about all the glory moments.

“I want to thank my teammates, who have constantly challenged me every day and made me better. I want to thank my family, who have relentlessly supported me and sacrificed so much for me,” Alex Morgan stated in her farewell speech.

She continued, “There have been so many incredible moments in my career, but this one, this last moment I share on the field with you, I will cherish forever. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
