Millions of young fans look up to Megan Rapinoe. The 37-year-old has truly been an inspirational figure in women’s soccer. She has also been an advocate for women’s equality and equal pay rights. However, even after such a successful career, the forward has some kind of advice for her younger self.
Recently, a famous author, Dr. Jebra Faushay, shared a small clip of Rapinoe. In the video, she was asked what kind of advice she would give to her younger self. To which she started off by saying, “Oh my gosh, one piece of advice…Oh, this is tough.” However, the OL Reign star quickly added, “Probably start asking for more money earlier.”

After quoting her words, she gave a big, tooth-filled smile. Indeed, it is quite eyebrow-raising advice from the star forward. Well, for those who still didn’t catch the reference, it was actually regarding her national team pay. Notably, Rapinoe was among the key figures to play an influential role during the USWNT’s fight for equal pay.
Unfortunately, her fighting spirit didn’t follow her to this year’s World Cup. The player missed a crucial penalty against Sweden in the round of 16, thus taking them out of the race for the golden trophy. Nevertheless, coming back to her words, it seems the player insisted on asking for more money, despite getting $300,000 after the World Cup.

Thanks to the newly established collective bargaining agreements signed in 2022 by both the U.S. women’s and men’s senior national teams, the ladies won’t be paid less. For the first time in U.S. soccer history, the combined earnings of $16.25 million from the performances of both men’s and women’s teams will now be united and distributed evenly.
some USWNT math: the U.S. will take home $3.25 million for its round of 16 exit.
that'll be added to the $13m the men’s team earned in qatar. 10% of the $16.25m total will go to U.S. soccer + the remaining $14.625m will be shared equally between both squads (~$298k per player). pic.twitter.com/5YyuZZH7WO

Within these earnings, a 10% portion will be allocated to U.S. Soccer, as outlined by the terms of the recent agreements with the federation. However, the remaining 90%—equivalent to $14.625 million—will be divided equally between the two teams. This translates to slightly over $298,000 per player, which can be rounded off to nearly $300,00. Indeed, it is a significant and meaningful step towards achieving equitable compensation.
