Tottenham fans were left stunned this week after reports came out that skipper Son Heung-Min was close to leaving the club this summer. According to reports, former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho wants to reunite with the South Korean after taking up the Fenerbahçe head coach job. This could be a colossal blow for the Lilywhites with Ange Postecoglou looking to build the team around his captain after Harry Kane’s exit last summer.

The Tottenham skipper addressed the rumors following South Korea’s win over China. Son Heung-Min spoke to the reporters and stated, “I have not had any exchanges with the club. I don’t have anything to say at this point. I feel a little uncomfortable with the situation. I am going to keep doing my best for Tottenham. I still have terms left on my contract. Money is not important to me. The most important thing is to play in a league that I enjoy playing in. I have so much more I want to accomplish in the Premier League.” (Quoted by the Standard.UK)

Son Heung-Min has a year left in his contract with Tottenham. The club also has the option to exercise a one-year extension. Son’s recent words will surely relieve the fans who feared the exit of one of their biggest stars. However, things haven’t been smooth sailing for South Korea lately. Especially, with head coach Ange Postecoglou keen on playing his star player out of position!

What’s next for Son Heung-Min under Ange Postecoglou?

Tottenham had a flying start to their season under Ange Postecoglou. However, things turned bleak as the golden patch wore out. Spurs were hit with multiple injuries, forcing the Australian tactician to change his tactics. One such decision was to deploy skipper Son Heung-Min as a number nine.

While the South Korean excels in running inside off the left flank, Richarlison’s poor form saw Postecoglou push the player to the bench. While Son did a fantastic job playing as a striker, the lack of familiarity with the role was evident in the latter stages.

Son Heung-Min made 36 appearances for Spurs last season. 23 of those games saw the player function as a striker. While the striker found 14 goals from the position, 9 of the 14 goals came in the first 6 games. While Postecoglou has the chance to make things right in the winter transfer window, he stuck to his guns.

However, with the club confirming Timo Werner’s move to North London, it will be interesting to see if the manager persists in playing his skipper up top despite the poor statistics.
