Beckham was of course England captain for six years between 2000 and 2006 and guided the Three Lions in two World Cups in 2002 and 2006. But the manner in which he got England to qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup was the stuff of legend.
David Beckham’s greatest moment for England
Back in 2001, England were trailing 2-1 to Greece in their vital 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifier match. Defeat meant that the Three Lions would have to play in a playoff match against Ukraine to qualify for the tournament.
Then in the 90+3rd minute deep into added time, England were awarded a free kick 25 yards away from the Greece goal.
What followed was nothing short of remarkable. Beckham, who was captain of England, stepped up to take the free kick. With all of England’s hopes and the world watching, Beckham struck one of his typical curling free kicks and hit the back of the Greece net with what was the last kick of the game, sending all of England into delirium.

Beckham later fondly recalled and stated later that he gets “goosebumps” thinking about that goal and calling it a “special moment”. It’s no secret that Beckham has been invaluable to England, in sport and away from it, so Lady Hervey’s statement about the former England captain getting knighted may be justified.
