The last time Wrexham AFC played in the Football League was in 2008. Since then, the club has been in the fifth division of the English soccer pyramid. The fortunes of the club started changing when Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney entered the scene. They took over the club in February 2021. The duo made a significant investment in the club with an eye on promotion.

After narrowly missing out on promotion last season, the club achieved it in style by winning the league with a game to go. It has been a Hollywood ending for the Wrexham season after a dramatic title race with Notts County. The club’s executive director Humphrey Ker is excited about the Red Dragons getting a promotion and feels they can achieve another promotion next season.

Wrexham ready for the new challenge

The promotion of Wrexham to Football League Two marks a significant achievement for the world’s third-oldest soccer club. The executive director feels Ryan Reynolds’ club will start its journey back to its glory years when they compete in the fourth division next season. As per Ker, the squad is competent enough to fight for another promotion next season.

Talking about the achievement to Nation Cymru, Ker said, “We feel that the sky’s the limit for Wrexham.” Speaking of the support club received, the executive director added, “You look at the crowds we had in the stadium all season, the crowds that were outside the stadium (on Saturday), people couldn’t get a ticket. They just wanted to be in town, close to the stadium, close to the action.”

Ker thinks it will be more challenging in League Two, but he has confidence in the squad and the people around the club. The executive director thinks they are going in the right direction. “We want to do this again. We want to be having these parties next year and as many summers after that as we can possibly manage,” Ker added.

Wrexham ensured the National League title with a victory against Boreham Wood last weekend. With a game remaining, the Red Dragons have set a record for the most points in a single season of the National League. Currently, the club is on 110 points. They also have a chance to set a new record for most goals in the season if they score more goals than second-placed Notts County.
