A lot of expectations are on the shoulders of Darwin Nunez, as Liverpool moves into a new era away from Jurgen Klopp. With a few players like Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino moving away, the Reds will need Nunez to fire on all cylinders. However, the opinions about the Uruguayan have varied among the club’s fans, and recently even Michael Owen expressed his apprehension about his potential. However, his compatriot Luis Suarez has come to the rescue, entrusting him to have a glorious future due to one marker ahead of the 2024 Copa America in the USA.

In a recent interview with AUFTV, Suarez praised Darwin Nunez for not inculcating arrogance. According to Teledoce, he said, “Those are details that demonstrate the greatness and humility of a player who is going to be one of the best, if not [already] one of the best in the world today,” after Nunez’s gesture towards him recently.

Intending to prevent Argentina from overtaking them in terms of Copa America titles, La Celeste prepares by allowing Nunez to pass on his jersey number (9) to Suarez. This touched the heart of the Inter Miami player, who wore the same number nine jersey for over 15 years. Meanwhile, even Jurgen Klopp felt that Darwin Nunez was up for greener pastures ahead which Suarez’s opinion echoed. The 24-year-old has been under scrutiny due to some reckless play missing easy chances regularly. Yet, Klopp backed him saying that he was unlucky with the outcomes despite working hard to get into such goal-scoring positions. Citing his incredible ability to create such chances, Klopp felt he has five more years of best game with himself. However, Owen thought otherwise.

Michael Owen doesn’t rate Darwin Nunez like Suarez and Jurgen Klopp

On the other hand, Owen seemed disappointed with Darwin Nunez missing easy chances. The Uruguayan just behind Erling Haaland is at number two for missing big chances in the Premier League last season with 27 opportunities. Owen earlier said, “I think if he continues like he is now, I think people will probably just accept that that’s what he’s going to be forever. When I first saw him, I thought, geez, he’s raw. I expected it obviously,” citing that Nunez cannot keep up with the expectations.

The former Reds striker who moved to play for archrivals Manchester United feels Nunez should have already learned by this age and may remain like this. Nevertheless, the striker has immense potential and has the backing of his manager and teammates. And with the upcoming Copa America in hand, the player has the ammunition and the opportunity to silence all his critics.
