Can Inter Miami survive without Messi, or is he the only hope for their success?

The last few weeks were quite busy for Lionel Messi but his effort bore him fruit. Putting in hours during the International break proved favorable as he lifted his second and Argentina’s record 16th Copa America. But winning the prestigious trophy also came at the cost of sustaining a tear-jerking injury. This raises concern about whether he’ll be playing tonight for Inter Miami, as anticipation was high to see La Pulga make his return for the Herons, who had been missing him for almost a month.

But even though his commitments with the national team are over, he might not be able to take the pitch. Unfortunately, Lionel Messi’s chances of playing against Toronto seem very bleak. During the Copa America final, the 37-year-old tripped in an attempt to chase the ball after the hour mark. While leaving the pitch, he was limping and by the time he made it to the bench, he was crying.

Notably, further images showed how his ankle was swollen. So far there weren’t any updates offered regarding his return date. However, Tata Martino, in his latest presser dropped a heavy update. “He twisted his ankle, and the injury is present so tests are needed and (we) wait for results. I’ve had the opportunity to see other images.”

“But if it looks like this, it seems it happened this morning. There will be tests done to determine the severity of the situation. We are always informed through our kinesiologist Walter Insaurralde, who is also the kinesiologist of the national team. He is very cautious at giving a final diagnosis before results are in,” Tata concluded. Not the most positive update by the Argentine. And it looks increasingly likely that Lionel Messi won’t be at 100%, for this week at least.

Although Inter Miami doesn’t have any other injury issues, a significant absence tonight will be Sergio Busquets. The Spanish midfielder was sent off due to a challenge in the previous game against Cincinnati, where they were thrashed 6-1. Luckily, Luis Suarez is expected to fill over his long-term absence. As for Lionel Messi, he will be watching his side while nursing his injury.

Speaking of which, what’s the latest update on his knock?

A positive glimmer of hope amidst Lionel Messi’s ugly injury

Dr. Rajpal Brar, a popular sports doc active on social media, confirmed a report by Gaston Edul saying, “Good news on Messi. No surgery required, just physio.” Even though the injury is not as serious to require surgery, the Argentine not returning back to his home country to celebrate the Copa title speaks volumes. He’s remained in South Florida as the evaluations have begun with Inter Miami.

Tata Martino had also revealed that ankle injuries are “unpredictable” while also confirming that “Leo, wanted to stay on the field” in the final. Depending on the severity of this injury, Messi could also miss the MLS All-Star Game in Columbus, on July 24. His club’s two Leagues Cup matches on July 27 and August 3 are also in doubt. However, the Herons are currently comfortably sitting one point behind FC Cincinnati and are certain to make the playoffs. So, there’s no real urgency to rush the Argentine back for now.
