Should Olympic medals be more durable? Lynn Williams' broken medal sparks debate!

The celebrations for the Paris Olympic triumph must have been wild for the US Women’s National Team. No, we aren’t talking about late-night singing, dancing, or popping champagne. Rather, it’s Lynn Williams breaking her gold medal while jamming in the moment. Though one would call it the Gotham FC star’s fault for going too hard on the celebrations, Williams says “Ironically, that’s not how it broke.”

Currently under the weather, the 31-year-old posted a video on Instagram stories to narrate the tale of being ‘carried away with the celebratory actions’ while making soup and having an English muffin. Starting with how she broke her metal and got the ‘world’s most expensive coaster,’ the veteran explained the little bar that held the medal was quite weak.

Obviously, you guys also saw me swinging the thing around. I’m sure it didn’t help, but that’s not how it broke. I had it on my shoulder like a little purse, and I was just jumping, dancing, and I jumped down, and it just fell off.” Realizing the ribbon had separated from the metal, she tried to get her metal off the ground but it was too late.

Closely showing the medal on camera, Lynn continued, “It has a dent now, so it’s definitely one of a kind, and the little bar is gone. so I don’t know what happened.” While again agreeing that swinging it around didn’t help, she complained that the bar got loose very easily. “I just think that they should have made these better. They should have made them more sturdy and obviously I can’t be faulted for that.”

“I don’t know if I’m gonna get it fixed, we are waiting to hear from the IOC. They said I could probably get one, I had to prove to them that it was, in fact, damaged, but now we’re just waiting to see if not; honestly, I think it’s a cool funny story. I have a little gold medal. That’s the story,” concluded Williams giving a big thumbs up in the air.

We wouldn’t agree more with that Lynn. Hysterically, her fiance Marley Biyendolo shared behind-the-scenes on social media to showcase how celebrating wildly saw her break the medal. He even wrote a humorous caption taunting the NWSL star saying, “She still wonders ‘how’.”

Have an interesting take?

Perhaps Williams should have been careful with the celebrations, even though it remains one of the most significant highlights of his career. The stark caution comes after the fact that not everyone got gold to take it home. On the flip side, it is justified, considering the role she played in Emma Hayes’ team.

Lynn Williams is the ‘best teammate’ one could possibly have!

Emma Hayes was in awe of Lynn Williams’ attitude and contribution to the team. The former Chelsea boss hailed the Gotham star as a player who “epitomizes everything you want in a squad, someone who cares, someone who trains with great intensity, someone who’s intentional.” Hayes continued, “She doesn’t give up on herself but most importantly, she’s the best teammate you could possibly have.”

Williams may have been second fiddle to ‘Tripple Espresso’ a.k.a. the attacking trio of Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman, and Sophia Smith. Yet, that doesn’t deny the Gotham forward’s contribution to the team. She came off the bench to add a goal during the 4-1 against Germany. Even the rest of the tournament saw her make remarkable assistance to her teammates whenever sent up the pitch.

This is the only reason why one may cut her some slack for breaking the medal. Rest assured, it’s fine Lynn, you’re not guilty.
