Copa America is one tournament that will raise every soccer fan’s emotions. But this year’s edition promises to be a rollercoaster with the build-up already involving an intense battle of minds. The recent spat between Lionel Messi and Rodrygo added spice to the competition, but it looks like there’s more flavor to come as experts open up their unique perspectives. Nonetheless, the recent one by a former Chilean star can definitely surprise some supporters while it may amuse others, especially from Brazil and Real Madrid.
Former goalkeeper of Chile, Johnny Herrera dropped a bold prediction saying that Lionel Messi would fail to shine at the 2024 Copa America. According to TNT Sports, he said, “Messi will be the great failure of the Copa America,” and further indicated that he isn’t the favorite to win this edition, which may sting Leo.
The statement comes just before Argentina kicks off the campaign against Canada tonight. In addition, Herrera’s nation is in the same group as La Albiceleste, which makes the battle even more interesting when Chile takes on Lionel Scaloni’s side on June 25th. The former goalkeeper was a part of the 2015 and 2016 Chile squads, which won two consecutive titles breaking the Inter Miami player’s heart. Herrera is once again challenging Messi off the field, claiming that he won’t have a similar performance as before.

On the other hand, the 43-year-old picked the future Real Madrid sensation Endrick to be the best young player in the tournament. Although too early to call, Endrick is giving Pele-esque vibes. He became the youngest player since Pelé to score three goals for Brazil. Remarkably, he achieved this feat while still under 18, netting in two consecutive games. Two of his three goals proved match-winners against England and Mexico.
More ignition from Hererra to Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi is used to maintaining his composure regarding criticisms aimed at him. However, Hererra has even challenged Argentina, saying, “Brazil is more favorite than Argentina to win the Copa América,” and predicted Uruguay to be the runner-up. Hence, it will be interesting to see how the 8-time Ballon d’Or will react in the game against Chelsea.
Moreover, the 36-year-old retaliated against Rodrygo, who called Argentina cowards during a riot-struck game in last year’s World Cup qualifiers. With everything running in the background, the upcoming competition is expected to bring out high adrenaline levels. But will Lionel Messi take up the challenge and respond, or will he ignore it? Let us know in the comments.
