Bill Simmons is undeniably one of the most reputed and harshest critics in the sports world. The CEO of ‘Ringer’ has been making waves with his opinions on Spotify ever since podcast culture picked up steam. For the last six weeks, Simmons has been on a hiatus but the shocking World Cup exit by the USWNT has forced him out of hibernation.

In his comeback podcast, the loudest male voice in sports media brutally slammed Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe for their performances and raised questions about their selection to the team.

The former ESPN journalist came out of his hiatus to record a hard-hitting two-part podcast in criticism of the USWNT. He in particular targeted Alex Morgan who he believed didn’t deserve to be the striker for the team. He dug up relevant stats from the past to add weight to his opinion.

“If you take away that Thailand game, she has scored two goals in the last 17 World Cup games,” he said. “This is the striker. This is the one who’s supposed to be the most dangerous player on the field. Who is supposed to produce goals and she hasn’t produced goals since the mid-2010s on the national level,” opined the CEO of “Ringer”.

The 53-year-old media personality then accused the media and fans of unnecessarily hyping her up as a “superstar” even though the stats say otherwise. “We gotta keep propping her up, pretending she’s a superstar. She’s not a superstar. She’s really, honestly never been a superstar,” said Simmons boldly. The media personality didn’t stop with Morgan as he then went on a comparatively less brutal rant against Megan Rapinoe.

Compared to Alex Morgan, Bill Simmons adopted more of a sympathetic tone to criticize Megan Rapinoe. The podcaster basically blamed it all on Rapinoe’s age and felt sorry for her that it all culminated in her missing the penalty kick in the end. To prove his point, he drew a parallel between Udonis Haslem’s career end with Rapinoe’s.

Describing the situation, Simmons noted that at 37 years of age, Rapinoe, despite her illustrious and legendary career, seems to be facing the inevitable challenges that come with playing soccer in one’s late 30s. He likened her performance to that of Udonis Rapinoe, as opposed to the iconic Megan Rapinoe. During the final 25 minutes of the game, her impact was limited, culminating in a missed penalty kick, opined the CEO of “Ringer”.
