Can USMNT level up after so much effort? US Soccer has ramped up its process to fill the gaps in the men’s team after it faced a shocking exit from the 2024 Copa America in the group stage. To avoid a similar fate in the 2026 World Cup, the federation negotiated with Argentinean coach Mauricio Pochettino to join as a coach. However, in a stunning revelation, reports now reveal the hand of women’s coach Emma Hayes in appointing the former PSG manager. But will the Englishwoman’s assistance bring the habit of winning big trophies to the men’s team?
Senior journalist Felipe Cardenas from the Athletic gave an insight into Hayes’ interest in bringing Poch to the USA. “They were both at Chelsea if you remember Emma Hayes and Pochettino. They know each other well,” he stated, speaking to Goalzo America.
He continued, “The Athletic reported that while she was coaching women at the Olympics in Paris, she kept checking in to make sure that Pochettino’s deal and everything, that the connections that were being made were on the right track,” suggesting that she was constantly being updated about the progress.

Joining a national team offers relatively lower financial compensation for the coaches. And once he signs for the USMNT, Pochettino may not negotiate any deals with the London club. Hence, the appointment is getting delayed.
Moreover, the intriguing part about his salary with the Stars and Stripes men is also high, as the question of the equal pay policy also arises. However, the main question is whether the USMNT will thrive under the experienced coach. And despite all the excitement, supporters will expect results from the team, struggling in global tournaments.
