Her latest song is Copa Vacia with Manuel Turizo. In the music video, the Waka-Waka singer interestingly dresses up like a mermaid. Just hours ago, she sat down and explained the reasoning behind the ‘mermaid’ narrative.

Shakira’s attempt to represent ‘a woman who was taken away’ from her habitat

About a month ago, Shakira dropped her track with Manuel Turizo. It is safe to say that the song has been a superhit one with over 54 million views. The music artist interestingly tries to portray her inner thoughts by being a mermaid this time. She shot several scenes while she was tied up and in a fish tank too. While the lyrics are as top-notch as ever, the Colombian icon explained why she dressed up like a mermaid.

She called it the classic narrative of the ‘fish out of the water’. Shakira continued, “In a way my videos represent what I’m thinking, how I’m feeling, emotions, the moment I’m going through. In this video, the woman or the representation of the woman that has been taken away from her habitat. That has moved in with this guy who has a kind of enclosed in this fishbowl. Pride over freedom”.

“To neglect her because he’s not really paying attention to her, then she ends up in the trash. And I loved using the mermaid to represent this reality. And it’s sometimes so common you know, in couples”. During her explanation, she never linked anything to her own personal life, and neither did she make a comparison to her previous relationship. It’ll be interesting to see if Gerard Pique responds to the interview.
