The defeat against Villareal has caused a shockwave in FC Barcelona. On top of that, club legend and coach Xavi announced that he would leave at the end of the season. However, another shock exit has been potentially confirmed as Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto is heading to the exit. Barcelona apparently is not interested in extending the services of the versatile midfielder with a key factor being the roadblock.

MLS club Inter Miami has been linked with the full-back. A reunion with Messi, Busquets, Alba, and Suarez could be ideal for the 31-year-old star. Is he interested in the move though?

As per Diario AS, FC Barcelona is not going to renew the services of Sergi Roberto. The major problem being pointed out is Roberto’s injuries. From January 2023, the star has missed 14 matches due to injuries. Considering that Roberto is not an outright starter, it seems Barcelona doesn’t find the point in offering a contract to a player who has injury issues.

Also, Barcelona’s stance is not new considering that they were hesitant in renewing his contract previously. It was manager Xavi Hernandez who deemed Roberto’s continuity as a priority considering how the squad majorly consisted of young players. With Xavi confirming his departure, the upper management seems to have pulled the trigger regarding the Roberto case.

The question regarding the Spaniard’s next move is an interesting one. There have been lots of links to MLS sides, particularly Inter Miami. Besides, Roberto had previously stated that he would be interested in trying the MLS experience. However, he didn’t seem too interested in a reunion with Lionel Messi previously.

Ahead of Barcelona’s Super Cup meeting with Real Madrid, the full-back addressed the rumors linking him to the MLS. The veteran fullback said, “If the manager wants me to stay, I’m sure that we won’t have any problem to agree on a new deal. I hope next season we’ll be here to speak about finals again.” However, Xavi’s exit might force Roberto to rethink his plans.

Back in 2022, the full-back had revealed that he had planned to play in the MLS at 33 or 34 years old. Interestingly, this was when Messi was still a PSG player. Roberto also talked about living the MLS experience and how the 2026 World Cup would further enhance the league.
