It’s a tough start to the new year for Wayne Rooney. The 38-year-old coach received the sack by the EFL Championship team Birmingham City due to a shocking decline in the past few months. However, the move from the club gained criticism from a former Aston Villa star who also feels it could be ‘panicky.’
Birmingham City has had a refreshing start to the current season. Starting 6th on the table, the team has slid to 20th since Rooney took over. Hence, the club sacked the former Manchester United legend. But what made the expert criticize this move by the club?

It hasn’t been very long since Wayne Rooney joined the Birmingham club. The former Manchester United star joined in October 2023 when the club performed well in the league. And to call him off so early was what baffled a pundit, Gabby Agbonlahor. Speaking to talkSPORT, Gabby said, “Still got a window, why bring him in? All the fuss about bringing Wayne Rooney in, and then boom! Don’t give him a transfer window to get players out and bring his own players in. It seems a bit panicky there.”

Agbonlahor questioned the purpose of signing Rooney when the team was doing well in 6th place. The former Villa player was not sure if it was due to his ability as a manager or his fame. As the January transfer window is already open, the analyst expected more patience instead of panicking from the owners.
Yet, the club, on the other hand, wasn’t amused by the results. The team could not win 13 of 15 games under Wayne Rooney. The former Manchester United player had extensive soccer expertise during matches. But until now, his managerial career has not taken off the way he wanted.
Gloomy coaching spells for Rooney
The decision came as a massive blow for the Englishman, who disappointedly stated that it would “take some time to get over this setback,” but also understood the situation. The club has suffered for many seasons, as their best finish in the last ten years was 10th in the 2014–15 and 2015–16 seasons.

Wayne Rooney also confessed to needing more time to sort things out. The former Premier League winner moved in to prove a point after an average stint with DC United without qualifying for the playoffs. Prior to that, Rooney’s stint at Derby County was also a flop, with the club getting relegated. But the former striker is now expected to take some time off with his family. Where do you think Rooney should join next?
