“Screw the NFL” – Republican Politician Lavern Spicer Becomes a Soccer Fan Over FIFA’s Rejection of Ukrainian President Zelensky’s Request

The FIFA World Cup final is around the corner. The tournament proved to be a success in the eyes of FIFA. It was the first World Cup that was held in the winter. As Argentina and France are gearing up for the decisive game, another off-the-field news made the headlines. FIFA rejected the request of war-affected Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky’s appeal to address during the final.

The fans were quick to voice their opinions after the news, along with certain celebs and politicians around the world. However, a Republican politician from the United States came with a weird tweet in response to the news.

Lavern Spicer is a soccer fan now

Lavern Spicer is a 57-year-old politician from the United States who represents the Republican Party. Spicer ran for the elections of the US House but lost in the Republican primary this year in August. She replied to a tweet mentioning the news of FIFA rejecting the Ukraine President’s request to speak during a World Cup final. Spicer tweeted, “Screw the NFL, I’m a FIFA fan as of today!” 

American Football still is the most popular game in the United States, followed by basketball. FIFA is eyeing to increase the popularity of soccer in the US, and in a recent interview FIFA’s chief claimed soccer will be the number one sport in North America in 2026. FIFA is eyeing record-break revenue from the 2026 tournament taking place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Volodymyr Zelensky is gathering support for Ukraine after the Russian invasion. He recognized the FIFA World Cup final as the massive stage to deliver his message of peace to the world. Zelensky expects an immense number of soccer fans around the globe to watch the finals. Although, FIFA denied the request.

The Qatar World Cup started with several controversies. The FIFA President made several attempts to fend off the criticism of the host nation. He asked the participating countries to stay away from politics and focus on soccer. He also criticized the West and Europe for their hypocrisy.

Although as the tournament went on, the talks over the controversies settled down. The shocking results throughout the group stage made the event exciting. Morocco’s team caught the eye of several soccer fans with their enthralling performances becoming the first-ever African country to qualify for the semis.

The final will see Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, the two PSG teammates lock horns for the trophy. As we all know, PSG is owned by Qatar Sports Investments, based in the host nation. It will be interesting to see whether Mbappe wins his second World Cup or Messi bags his first. But one thing is for sure, it will be a scintillating finale to the popular event.
