Women’s soccer is now starting to receive the popularity that it always deserved. However, a term like pregnancy is still a taboo subject for many. Along with her family, it’s equally also her soccer club’s responsibility to be there for her when she’s in need. Recently, USWNT soccer star, Megan Rapinoe publicly slammed the OL Groupe after getting to know that Lyon had once denied a pregnant soccer player her salary.

The Players Tribune just released an exclusive interview with Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir. During the interview, the Iceland soccer star talks about her club treated her unfairly.

Megan Rapinoe slams the OL Groupe!

Sara spoke about the time she played soccer for Lyon. The Iceland soccer star revealed how unfairly she was treated whilst she was pregnant. The soccer star was not paid her salary during her pregnancy. Sarah returned back to the soccer club after nearly a year and ultimately reported the issue to FIFPRO. A few months later, FIFPRO ordered Lyon to pay Sara all the money that they owed her. According to the landmark ruling, Lyon now owes Sara €82,094.82.

Megan Rapinoe plays for OL Reign. Even though it’s based in America, OL Reign and Lyon still have the same owners. However, Rapinoe did spend a year playing soccer in France for Lyon itself. However, after reading Sara’s story, the USWNT star does not seem too happy. Rapinoe hasn’t minced her words even the slightest in her tweet addressing the OL board.

Rapinoe quoted, “This is utterly disgraceful from @OL @OLfeminin. The culture at OL in France has a LONG way to go. Y’all love to talk about how much you support women, but this math is not mathing. I implore you to be the club that is ALWAYS supporting women, not the club that once did.”

Every female soccer player has always spoken well about how her family supported her during that tough phase. However, her soccer club has an equal responsibility to support her during those times, and paying a player her salary is the least a soccer club can do.
