Cementing its global soccer footprint, the USA could have hosted four consecutive prestigious tournaments. These included the Copa America in 2024, the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025, the FIFA World Cup in 26, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027. However, the US Soccer has now shelved its plans to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Last night, the US and Mexico jointly withdrew their bid to host the 2027 tournament. Ex-USWNT midfielder Sam Mewis thinks the 2027 bid withdrawal will devastate fans and USWNT players. Anyhow, she saw some light at the end of the tunnel.
The US Soccer Federation’s backtracking from the 2027 bid became the talking point in a conversation between Sam Mewis and Men in Blazers podcast host Roger Bennett. “It’s devastating for the fans. It’s devastating for US soccer commercially.. Although good news that we’re just pushing the bid and hopefully will reap all of those rewards,” said Sam Mewis. The 31-year-old is optimistic about the US and Mexican bodies’ push for the 2031 bid. However, she soon hinted some players in the current US squad won’t be in the mix in 2031 after seven years. Later on, believing the US could successfully bid again in 2031, the former USWNT midfielder detailed the importance of having a World Cup at home.

“I think the dream is like what happened in 1999. It’s like Brandi Chastain won the World Cup for the US. She did it in California. The team grew in popularity week over week, game over game. To see that kind of exponential explosion of the game, that’s possible when it’s played on home soil,” Sam Mewis added. She continued, “We’re on a much higher jumping-off point which is magical to think we just have to be patient and cross our fingers to wait for 2031.“ Mewis and others’ wait till 2031 seems to be worth it.

It seems Sam Mewis was not alone in focusing on the silver lining for the 2031 WC. Regarding the bid withdrawal, US Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone shared a statement, “Hosting a World Cup tournament is a huge undertaking — and having additional time to prepare allows us to maximize its impact across the globe”. Thereafter, she detailed that the 2031 WC will guarantee an equitable experience for players and other stakeholders.

“Shifting our bid will enable us to host a record-breaking Women’s World Cup in 2031 that will help to grow and raise the level of the women’s game both here at home as well as across the globe,” the US Soccer chief added. Given women’s soccer’s northward journey in the US, the 2031 World Cup will surely be a blockbuster event. But a seven-year-long wait might not be ideal for certain superstars who dominate the USWNT right now. What is your take on the US Soccer’s World Cup moves? Tell us in the comments.
