The race for the U.S. presidential seat continues to heat up. It’s only a matter of time before either Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Kamala Harris becomes the 47th President of the United States. Meanwhile, prominent figures are actively encouraging support for their favored candidates, with Sam Mewis also joining the campaign efforts and urging people to vote.
The former USWNT superstar made this heartfelt appeal on the latest episode of ‘The Women’s Game’ podcast, which she hosts, and had also invited her former teammate, Becky Sauerbrunn. While wrapping up the hour-long talk, Mewis brought up the election topic and began, “Today is election day. I know there is so much election coverage out there and I know that it can be exhausting to keep hearing about it.”
Acknowledging the stressful atmosphere among the supporters, she said, “Becky and I wanted to take this opportunity to urge everybody to get out and vote, making your voice heard especially in this election which has huge implications for all of us, especially for women. Getting out and voting really, really matters hopefully it can make a difference.“

Interestingly, Mewis even vocally shared her vote among her listeners, as the former Manchester City star looks to have pledged her alliance with Donald Trump’s rival. “I voted for Kamla Harris, which was an inspiring moment and to borrow a phrase that I’ve heard. I was it felt like the lighting and the passing of a torch. I felt like it was this moment of hope and optimism,” added the 32-year-old.

Sam Mewis further emphasized unity, urging everyone to get out and vote. Before concluding her appeal, she made final efforts to encourage people to also check in on friends and family, highlighting the importance of participating in the election. Notably, she isn’t alone in siding with Kamla Harris as more recently, another retired USWNT star shared her views on the Trump vs Harris fight.

Sam Mewis isn’t the first USWNT icon to make such a public voting appeal. A few weeks ago, Megan Rapinoe publicly pledged her support for Kamala Harris. The 38-year-old made an impassioned appeal to her 2 million dedicated Instagram followers, urging them to cast their votes. She shared a photo of herself in a USWNT shirt, celebrating during the 2019 World Cup campaign.
Interestingly, the post was in collaboration with Doug Emhoff, the Second Gentleman of the United States and husband of Harris. “I’m voting for Kamala Harris because I believe in the power of coalition building– it’s how we create lasting change. I have worked toward a goal through different approaches and perspectives, fighting to move forward and make progress for everyone is always worth it. Let’s unite for a better future,” she wrote.

Given her history with Harris’ rival, this endorsement was not surprising. There has long been a feud between Rapinoe and Trump. Either way, it remains to be seen how her message inspires her fans to go out and vote.
