“I didn’t know how to have this conversation with you, but I think it’s best just saying it”—said Sam Kerr this morning, hinting at a potential exit from the London side, who just lost Emma Hayes. But, just minutes later, a series of posts and videos surfaced, with the Australian international saying, “Guys, what’s all this? I’m not leaving!” And BAAM! A contract extension with the Blues until 2026, pouring cold water on her departure talks. But keeping the prank aside, what led Kerr to stay put with the WSL side?

Sam Kerr really had everyone in the first half! One should give it to the Chelsea and the Australian forward for teasing her exit. But positive news for all the West London-based club’s supporters as she is set to stay until 2026. As compiled by journalist Ben Jacobs, Kerr said, “It’s really exciting and a very proud moment for me. Having the opportunity to stay at a club like Chelsea means a lot to me. I’m really excited to continue to push and to try to win trophies.”

Notably, it was hard to see the 30-year-old leave, given what she has achieved until now. Having arrived from the Chicago Red Stars in November 2020, she has scored 99 goals in 128 appearances for the club, clinching five WSL titles, three FA Cups, and two League Cups. Also, Kerr had a message: “You really think I would end with just 99 goals.”

Interestingly, to further celebrate her stay, Chelsea temporarily changed their stadium’s name from ‘Stamford Bridge’ to ‘Samford Bridge.’ With a stay, she will play under Emma Hayes’ replacement, Sonia Bompastor, and again contest for silverware. But the legacy left by Hayes is probably untouchable.

Emma Hayes came as a modest manager but left as a legendary boss, etching her name in the history books of Chelsea. As the English coach left to lead USWNT, Sonia Bompastor came in to fill her role. But what makes the new Chelsea manager the right person for the job? For starters, she has done a solid job at her former club, Lyon. The French tactician is the first woman to win the UEFA Champions League as a player and manager.

Aside from delivering a European title to Lyon, she also led the French side, to three league titles and three domestic cups. Indeed, a serial winner quality is a must to become a coach of Chelsea. The Blues have enjoyed a significant dominance over this decade. Hence, Bompastor has a great responsibility on her shoulders to maintain that bar. Nevertheless, time will tell how Chelsea will do under their new coach.
