On September 9th, Alex Morgan played her final game in her career. The match between the San Diego Wave and the North Carolina Courage became the last dance for a talented player who donned the Star and Stripes jersey for years. Hence, it’s a celebration of her career with different stories about the player’s epic moments. Meanwhile, the USWNT legend detailed her last game emotions in an interview with Sports Illustrated.

The 2x World Cup winner and the Olympic gold medalist saw a downpour of emotions in her final game. The player was substituted in the 13th minute of the San Diego Wave’s 4-1 loss to North Carolina Courage. Unsurprisingly, the 26,516 in Snapdragon stadium stood up and applauded her when she strolled down the turf for one last time. She even had a penalty to score but missed the effort, ending the hopes of a fairytale ending. But Morgan reflected on the final game.

“It was such an incredible and perfect day, and with the way everything came together so quickly, it was all just very emotional, overwhelming and super raw because there wasn’t going to be a chance to do it again,” said Alex Morgan, embracing all the adulation. It’s challenging to walk away from a game you’re passionate about, especially after achieving so much success. She didn’t have the announcement she wanted when Emma Hayes took over. The coach dropped her for the Paris Olympics. Therefore, one might feel self-doubts in the process.

She continued, “It was a moment that I wanted to soak in and really appreciate, not only to celebrate what I’ve accomplished, but to celebrate my family who have sacrificed so much and been there with me along the way.”

It’s amazing to see the recognition she is finally getting after years of serving her nation.
