When examining the fans’ attachment to soccer clubs through ownership bonds, only a few clubs truly demonstrate adoration for their ownership. You can probably say Manchester City. From the perils of extinction, the Abu Dhabi United Group revolutionized the entire area around the club. Apart from developing the soccer club, they improved most parts of the city. Likewise, Leicester City owners helped the club to lift an unprecedented English Premier League title in 2016. Likewise, Wrexham too remains a solid model for soccer clubs.
Since their owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over the club in 2021, there was only one direction the club went to – to the top. Nobody can stop them from what looks like the comeback story for the ages. Adding spice to the story, former Wrexham manager, Dean Saunders (2008-2011) believed it could become a failure when the Hollywood duo entered the town of Wrexham. How wrong could he get?
Saunders, as mentioned in The Leader, expressed doubts about this particular ownership. He conceded, “The two superstars in Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have come in which I initially thought was a joke.” These two deserve a documentary of their own. Hailing from a country dominated by a different type of football, having two Hollywood owners running a club successfully to the top demands respect.

Yet, Saunders loves the Hollywood narrative that came from the owners themselves. It makes up for a story for the ages. Therefore, Saunders continued, “Everyone thought it was a joke but I have to say you couldn’t have written a script any better. They’ve made a TV show out of it and it’s now a tourist attraction. People come in from all over the world. Not only has the football club benefited but the whole town has. They’ve put so much money into it.”

Wrexham slowly making steps to the top!
Yes, in terms of capital funding by the ownership, no partners could ever make this impact. They expanded the Racecourse Stadium to get more fans to the club by developing the 10,000 seats to 15,000. Another major taking point is the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary. Through this documentary alone, they made millions and attracted eyeballs to the club. It’s always intriguing to see what goes behind the scenes and Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney found the perfect recipe for their success. Nonetheless, this docuseries is one to watch.
In addition, they successfully attract celebrities to the club, to attract other investors, and create opportunities for potential investments. If investments don’t yield returns, everything can go down the drain. Don’t worry, they are performing extraordinarily. They got back-to-back promotions in recent years, and aim to reach the English Premier League in the next two years.
